A new respiratory illness titled ‘Coronavirus’ is affecting thousands of people around the world. Necessary precautions should be taken, and individuals are advised to remain alert of the dangers this virus can bring.

The most common signs of the infection include fever, cough, vomiting and difficulty in breathing. In most severe cases, coronavirus can cause pneumonia and kidney failure. Individuals are recommended to wash their hands on a regular basis, cover mouth and nose whilst coughing or sneezing and prepare thoroughly cooked meals.

This pandemic has also led to more uncertainty and restlessness across borders. This is having a knock-on effect on individual’s mental health.

What are some of the steps you can take to protect your mental state?

Avoid listening to news that could make you more distressed or anxious

Seek information from credible sources only (i.e. Government sources & NHS websites)

Mute WhatsApp groups or social media posts that may be overwhelming or triggering anxiety

If you are self-isolating – make sure you try to keep a balance in your routine and add some variety

Stay connected (online) – keep in touch with family and friends through telephone, social media or email. If you are sharing content in groups be wary of the source it is coming from and whether it may cause another person stress or tension.

Eat well and stay hydrated.

Try to keep active – exercises, cleaning your home, dancing to music, yoga, DIY, arts and crafts, meditation etc.
